Biomass
Biomass is material, derived from plants. Plants use solar energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars that can be stored through a process called photosynthesis. Organic wastes are also considered biomass because they began as plant matter. There are also studies how the sugars in biomass can be converted into more usable forms of energy such as electricity and fuels.
Some plants such as sugarcane and sugar beets stored energy as a simple sugar. They are most commonly used for food. Other plants store more energy in the form of complex sugars, called starches. These plants include cereals, which are also consumed as food.
Another type of plant matter, called cellulose biomass is created by complex polysaccharides and generally not used as food resource. This type of biomass is under discussion whether to use as feedstock for bioethanol production.
